attitude of gratitude

I've mentioned before on my blog that I am a worrier.  I can get worked up about the almost anything, and nearly worry myself sick about it.  So when I saw a devotional at the Bible bookstore a few months ago titled, Calm My Anxious Heart, I thought it might be worth reading.  Fast-forward to Friday evening, I was reading through a chapter about halfway through the book, and while nearly everything I read was thought provoking, one thing in particular caught my attention and just made my cheeks flame.  Here's what I read:

We tell our children, "Don't complain," but do we practice what we preach?  Elisabeth Elliot remembers that the children of the jungle tribe in South America where she ministered never complained because they had not been taught to complain.  Listen to your heart.  Listen to your words.  Look at your actions.  Are you teaching your children to be grateful for God's blessings? (Dillow, Linda.  Calm My Anxious Heart:  A Woman's Guide to Finding Contentment.  Colorado: Navpress, 2007.  p 99.)

These words made my heart sink.  You see, I can be very negative and often get annoyed easily by really insignificant little things (you know, those little dilemmas that are sometimes jokingly referred to as first world problems).  Sometimes I'll get all worked up and be so offended by something that I feel I have to post a complaint on Facebook about it, in the hopes of getting sympathy or to at least make me feel like I'm right about the situation.  Once in awhile, as I'm furiously typing away, I feel that little twinge, that convicted feeling, and (usually with a heavy sigh) decide not to post it after all as I remember that I shouldn't be using Facebook as a place to complain and be negative.  But you can be sure I mention it to Steve when he gets home!  I probably spend at least 15 minutes a day complaining to him about things that happened while he was at work, things people said to me or things I read on a some blog.  I don't call it complaining when I'm doing it, instead I usually just call it venting in a poor attempt to feel justified.  I highly doubt he enjoys listening to my "venting" day after day, I'm sure he'd much rather hear more about the positive things that happened throughout the day.

I've actually thought about this quite a bit but never really in the context that I thought about it Friday night - in the context of how it could be affecting Riggs.  What a poor example I am, focusing so much on the negative aspects of my day!  And what's worse is that because of my incorrect focus, he is not learning how important it is to be aware of and thankful for the many blessings in our lives each and everyday.  Phillipians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (ESV).  This verse isn't saying that we should only think of puppies and roses and newborn babies and butterflies, instead it means that we should find the good in each situation and dwell on it.  And if we are only thinking about good things, that means we will only talk about good things too.  I know too well that Riggs is like a little sponge watching my every move and listening to every word and soaking it all up.  I need to focus on having an "attitude of gratitude" rather than just an attitude.  What do you do when you find yourself focusing mainly on the negative rather than the positive?  How do you remind yourself to be thankful for the all the blessings, big and small, in your day to day life?

to sum it all up...

DAY EIGHTEEN - TWENTY TWO:  I know you might think it is cheating to lump five days together, but really, it's not, I promise!  At least not this time.  For the past five days I have been so thankful for family being back together!  I wish I had gotten a picture of all of us, but this about sums it up:

Beka got home from college very late on Friday night and everyone is very happy to see her.  At Costco yesterday, Corbin didn't want me to push "his" cart.  "I want Beka to push my cart!!!"  he proclaimed.  And every time I got to close to the front of the cart, he reminded me rather forcefully that she was pushing his cart :)

I am very thankful to be spending time with her, but mostly I am just thankful to have family all together again!  This has been a little preview of what Christmas will be like, and I am now even more excited!  We will truly all be together then, including all the Skinner girls, our Grandpa Wes, and our Aunt Connie and Uncle Doug!  I simply cannot wait!!

there whenever I need him

DAY TEN:  today I am very, very thankful for Steve.  He is my best friend and always there when I need him.  He works all day out in the cold, and comes home and takes care of me physically and emotionally (which if you know me can be quite a chore; I can be described as just a little emotional, and that's when I'm not pregnant ha).  He made my day today, and it's so, so nice to know that he is there for me every other day too, no matter what.  I truly thank God for him and at the same time pray for him everyday.  I couldn't have a better friend, and that makes him an amazing husband.

My first baby

DAY NINE:  Today I want to share how thankful I am for my little dog, Beau.  He has been my best friend and constant companion for the last four years, and I love him so much!  He has the sweetest personality and loves me completely unconditionally.  I love him!

I took this picture of my little guy today
he even keeps me nice and warm at night :)

catch up

I can't believe I'm already behind on my daily thanksgiving posts!  I guess I'd better get caught up :)

DAY SIX:  Yesterday I was thankful to spend some time with a friend we hadn't seen in a long time.  I was also thankful to my husband for spending hours outside doing some serious snow removal.  I usually don't mind shoveling (and in a weird way enjoy it because, hello, it means there is snow) but I am too clumsy to spend to much time walking around outside our house without the snow already being removed.  I almost fell about five times today out there just letting Beau out and getting the mail (it snowed about another four inches last night after Steve's hard work - he spent another hour out there today cleaning up after that lol).  So thankful he is home and happy to spend his day off making it safe out there!

DAY SEVEN:  Today I'm thankful for a cozy house and lots to keep me occupied while I'm sick.  I finished off my little rigglet's afghan (finally) and love seeing it draped over his cradle in our room.

I don't know what I would have done without some recliner friendly projects today.  Sinus headaches are no fun when you can't really take anything for relief (I chose not to take any medications while I'm pregnant, not even Tylenol, just trying to do what's best for baby), but having fun projects to work on make it much easier to ignore how bad I feel.

unplanned cleaning day

DAY THREE:  I am thankful for having a house full of nice things to put back in their places, lots of warm, snuggly clothes that need to be washed, folded and put away, and plenty of dirty dishes that need to be washed, dried and tucked away in the cupboards.

My mom has a plaque in her kitchen similar to this, and I always look at it when
I'm washing dishes.  I really need this at my house as a reminder every time
I wash the dishes, sometimes multiple times a day, to be thankful.  It's so, so true!

Today I planned on cutting out the rest of the pieces I need for my Christmas yellow brick road quilt.  I also need to cut off the extra batting and backing so I can sew the binding on the quilt I made for my little rigglet Rowan.  I left my rotary cutter at my sister Kelsey's house last time I was there, and it's always more fun to cut with company, so I just planned on going over to her place and having a cutting party.

In the back of my head I knew I had some cleaning to do that I've been avoiding by working on Christmas crafts, but I figured I'd get it done tomorrow.  I got my stuff together that I needed to take with me and took Beau outside for a quick (and chilly!) morning walk.

Then I took a shower, and the water didn't drain.  I mean it did eventually, but I can't stand it when things don't work properly and especially despise bathtubs that don't drain efficiently.  Usually I would try to get on my knees, bend over, and get in the drain myself with a wire hanger, but I looked down at my rather large belly and decided to just call the plumber.  I had just cleaned it out about three months ago anyway, and had gotten a rather large amount of hair out of there, so I figured it's probably further down the pipes.  I live in an old house, and the pipes for the sink and bathtub are interconnected and hook up to the main pipes after a pretty sharp corner, which we've had problems with before, so I'm glad to be getting it good and cleaned out.  Last time we had it snaked was over three years ago, so I guess it probably needs it anyway.

I called the plumber around 9am, and was happy to hear they could fit it in today.  But they couldn't come straight over of course, so I had to cancel my plans for a cutting party.  Instead I've spent the morning cleaning, and cleaning, and cleaning.  I always forget how I am about cleaning; once I start I just can't stop.  I just see more and more things that need cleaning, or organizing, or putting away, and I just keep going and going!  I decided to take a quick break to blog about what I'm thankful for before I forgot (and to eat lunch) and realized that I am so thankful just to have things to clean!  I'm also thankful for the energy and lack of back pain I have today - it makes going on a cleaning spree a lot easier and more productive.  But now I have to get back to organizing Steve's desk.  Hope you have have a thoughtful, thankful Thursday!

taking time to give thanks

November is one of my favorite months of the year, mostly because of Thanksgiving, but also because it means December, and more importantly Christmas, is right around the corner.  Both Thanksgiving and Christmas are holidays that have been commercialized to the max yet have great meaning.  This year I would like to really focus in on the meaning behind each holiday and think very hard about why we are celebrating.  For the month of November, I would like to share something I am thankful for each day leading up to Thanksgiving Day.  Since it is already the second day of the month, I will share two things today.

DAY ONE:  I am thankful for the snow and how beautiful it makes everything.  Even the wind is beautiful in its own way, and I am thankful to God for creating such an intricate, amazing earth for us to live on and enjoy.

DAY TWO:  I am thankful for having the means to do crafts and hobbies, while others in this world are struggling just to get enough to eat each day.  I love to spend time each day working on sewing, knitting, crocheting, and other craft projects and am so grateful for the chance to do so!

What are you thankful for?  Maybe you could also try to make it a goal this month to take time each day to recognize something you are thankful for :)

Thanksgiving Week

Since it is the week that we as Americans traditionally set aside one day to give thanks, I have decided to post everyday with something I am thankful for.

Today, I am thankful for the church family I grew up in and all the times throughout my life they have been there for me. I am also thankful for my close-knit family and great family lunches like the one I enjoyed today. I could keep going on and on about all I'm thankful for! One last thing I'm thankful for is the end of the semester being right around the corner. And the privilege of being able to get a good education.

Hope everyone is thinking about what you're thankful for this week too!
