five on friday: five years of marriage

F I V E
five years ago today I married my best friend. our wedding day was so beautiful and full of love, another one of those days that just went by way too fast. I wish I could go back and relive it at least once!

the weather was nearly just like today too, everything so green under cloudy skies that promise rain. the rain held off while guests arrived and during the ceremony, then the lightest little drops started to come down during our pictures outside. Finally there was a full-on downpour as we hurried through the crowd of our friends and family to jump in the limo to our happily ever after. it was just perfect, rain makes everything looks so glistening and vibrant and alive, and I love it so much.

I am so in love with the man I married, and am so thankful to be sharing my life with him. we have had an amazing five years together so far, with so many special milestones along the way. my heart is just bursting with excitement for all the beautiful moments that await us in our next five years together...

today

"Live in each season as it passes;
breathe in the air, drink the drink,
taste the fruit, and resign yourself
to the influence of the earth."
-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

For as long as I can remember, I feel like I've spent the majority of each season wishing for the next one. Spring comes and I just can't wait for summer. Summer's here and I find myself dreaming of fall. September hits and snowflakes dance through my mind to the beat of my favorite Christmas carols.

Ever since Riggs was born, I've really begun to realize how fast time passes. How each day is done in the blink of an eye no matter how long the moments might be. I can't get those days back, and it makes me sad. It makes me never want to wish my days away again, which, of course, is easier said than done.

This year I feel like I'm finally learning to enjoy my days as they come. Summer passed as quickly as ever, but I feel like I really got out and enjoyed it, enjoyed the warmth and the seemingly endless hours of light and the frantic energy. Now I notice the little changes that are happening each day as I walk around my yard and down my road. The leaves turn, one by one. The mornings are getting colder - I could see my breath this morning when I first went out to feed the chickens. And it's dark now when I get in bed to go to sleep.

The way the clouds have been rolling through the sky lets me know that fall is settling in, and that winter is coming. The cranes are back for a quick stop before continuing further south, and this week there was snow on Pioneer Peak.

But today isn't summer, fall, or winter, it's something in between, and I'm relishing in it.

2012 :: Our Best Year Yet

2012 was the best year of my life.  I gave birth at the very beginning of the year, and we have spent the past 11 and a half months thanking God for his precious gift to us.  Riggs has filled our lives with more love and joy and light then we ever thought possible.  We purchased our first home in April and have fallen more in love with it each and every day we are here.  There have been some lows throughout the year, but they pale in comparison to highs.  I am so excited for what 2013 holds, yet very sad to see 2012 go...

a year ago, I looked like this

Okay that's just a little scary.  And for the record, it doesn't really make me want to be pregnant again, for long time.  I love having my little Riggy on the outside!  It's just crazy how much difference a year makes, isn't it?  There are only 23 days left until this year is over and 2013 begins...I hope next year doesn't pass quite so fast!

thoughts on a snowy day...

As I went outside to get the mail, the heart-warming sound of snow crunching beneath my feet accompanied me all the way to the mail box and then back into the house.  The silently falling snow was beautiful and was already melting on my arms, shoulders and hair.  A smile was on my face as I came back in the house, but quickly vanished as I sat in my computer chair to finish two of my assignments.  I'm doomed to stay inside during the rest of daylight hours, to finish my homework and then attend my web chat class at 6:00pm.  I dearly wish that I could throw on my snowclothes and play outside, but I have too much to do, and besides, there is no one to play with.  I miss my childhood!  With my two sisters around, I always managed to coerce someone into playing with me.  This is one of the reasons I cannot wait to have my own children, so I can watch them play and enjoy their childhoods together (and secretly, I am excited to be able to join in their play).  Also, I am reminded of how important it is to cherish each day as it passes, for as time passes, we will look back on those days and smile fondly, wishing we could go back.

I always get a little teary eyed and sad when I think of the passage of time, and how quickly it truly goes.  There are a few Simon &Garfunkel songs that describe this feeling perfectly, and make my hair stand on end when I hear them.  The first is Leaves that are Green.

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
            I'm twenty-three now, but I won't be for long
            Time hurries on,
and the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind
and they crumble with the wind
            ...
            I threw a pebble in a brook
and watched the ripples run away
and they never made a sound
and the leaves that are green turn to brown

Every time I hear that last stanza, I think of how, just like the ripples, time doesn't make a sound as it passes by and if we are not careful, we will not notice.

The second,

especially poignant when sung on their "Old Friends" tour a few years ago when both men were close to being seventy, is the song Old Friends

            Old friends, old friends
sat on their park bench like bookends
            newspaper blowing through the grass
falls on the round toes of the high shoes
            of the old friends

old friends, winter companions the old men
lost in their overcoats waiting for the sunset
the sounds of the city sifting through trees
settle like dust on the shoulders of the old friends

Can you imagine us years from today
            sharing a park bench quietly
how terrible strange to be seventy
            old friends
            memory brushes the same years
            silently sharing the same fears

The last is a line from the little Bookends Theme
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph,
Preserve your memories, they are all that's left of you

This one makes me especially sad, until I remember that we have an even better life with our Father in heaven waiting for us when our life on earth comes to an end.   I pray that I remember each day to thank my God for the beautiful life he has given me on earth, as well as the perfect life that awaits me in heaven.
