getting ready

This week I have spent most of my time getting ready for Riggs to turn one on Saturday.  Typing that is so strange, I can't even believe my little baby is going to be one!  It is almost magical to me how fast time has passed this last year, and while I am excited to watch him grow and learn, part of my heart is broken knowing that his first year of life is over.  I will never hold my baby Riggs again, mewling and warm against my breast like I did when he was new.  I will never get to see that first smile again, or hear that first giggle, or watch him crawl for the first time on his knees.  Of course I have the memories of those events, yet as dear as they are to me I know in my heart that they will fade over time.  I wonder, is a little piece of my heart going to break each year as he grows older?  And I know that it will.

The speed at which this year has passed reminds me to savor every moment, every hour, every day, no matter how hard or uncomfortable it may seem at the moment.  There have been nights when I just did  not  want  to  get  out  of  bed as I heard those cries coming from his room, and yet once I was holding him close and listening to him nurse, I was so happy to be right where I was, just soaking it up, truly being present in and content with the season of my life.

As I gathered things here and there this week to make his first birthday more special, like his birthday ring, beeswax candles, and wool felt for his birthday crown, that bittersweet feeling has been ever present at the back of my mind.  I'm very sure that Saturday will be quite a day for me to get through, filled with love, light, pride, joy, and also a feeling of loss.  Yet I am somewhat surprised and delighted to discover that in the place of that precious infant is a bright-eyed toddler with a truly happy spirit and such profound determination.  Over the years I'm sure I will catch glimpses, here and there, of that sweet baby that used to be, maybe in the fullness of his cheek, or the corner of his mouth, or in the way his face softens when he sleeps.  And I will be so thankful, once again, that God sent this little angel into our lives.  We are so blessed.

(I apologize for the poor color/lighting in these last few pictures,
despite the steady increase in daylight it is still pretty dark here in the afternoons!)

suddenly, everything is different

Today I'm linking up again to join Michelle (who just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, btw...congratulations!) at The Vintage Apple for Oh, How Pinteresting.  This week I'm bringing back five of my all-time favorite pins that have been on my mind lately, hope you enjoy.  Happy Wednesday!

children's museum

We went to the Museum on Saturday and had so much fun watching Riggs explore everything there.  Even though it is a bit of a drive, we decided to join the Museum at members so that we could visit more often.  I just see Riggs having so much fun there over the next year - it's a great place for him to get some energy out and learn while he's at it.

the boy on the left is 18 months; I can't believe Riggs is going
to be that big, walking and talking (this term is used loosely here) around in only 7 months!

It was a lovely visit and I am looking forward to many more.  Even crawling Riggs managed to make his way around the children's area without much problem, although once he's walking it will make it a little bit easier for him to enjoy everything there.

We also saw the Body Worlds Vital exhibit while we were there.  It was a very eye opening exhibit and I'm so glad we went - what an inspiration to eat clean and gently exercise every part of our bodies! I highly recommend visiting this exhibit if it travels to your area.

dreaming of spring

what I wish I were wearing around everyday

what I'm actually wearing around everyday
I just had to share these pictures I took after visiting Target last week.  There were so many bright and adorable spring items on the racks of clothes and I was really tempted to purchase some of them...but I realized they'd just hang in the closet for four or five months before I could wear them and would probably be on clearance by then anyway so I sighed to myself and put them back.  But I hope you noticed that I did wear sandals in defiance of winter, so there.  Normally I love winter but this winter has been bipolar so I'm thinking onward to spring!  I'm sure next time it snows I'll be very excited and more in the wintery mood but for now I'm sticking to my sandals...

count your blessings

As I walked around the house this afternoon after Riggs had fallen asleep for his nap, I smiled at the chaos he had caused throughout the house earlier in the day.  I cleaned up each little mess, so thankful to be doing so. It's so easy to get exasperated after picking things up for the hundredth time and being realistic I know that will happen no matter how hard I try to be positive.  But today I just felt so blessed to have our own little king of chaos to be picking up after.  I know that motherhood is the greatest adventure I will ever have in my short life, and I am so very thankful to be on this sometimes messy journey.

my body in 2012

I have to say 2012 was quite the year for changes in the Harness family.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, it was by far the best year of our lives (no joke).  We had Riggs, bought our first home and I even got the exact truck I've wanted since before I could even drive (thank you Steve!). So many good things happened to us, and while there were definitely challenges too, I feel just completely blessed by the year that God gave us.

I've mentioned little things here and there about my fitness goals over the past couple of months, but I decided to dedicate an entire post to the all of the changes my body has gone through in 2012.  And trust me, there have been some crazy changes.

We'll start from the beginning, January 1, 2012 - I was past my due date with Riggs wondering when he was going to decide to come out and meet us.  My belly was big, full of a 9 pound 4 oz baby boy, and I had gained a little wait in the arms, legs and face during my pregnancy.  I didn't feel horrible about my body, but I felt pretty out of shape and not strong at all.

I didn't exercise as much during my pregnancy as I would have like because of the heart condition I developed about half way through.  But to be honest, I wasn't really doing too much before that anyway, other than walking and biking.  I did a little yoga here and there too, but my activity level was probably the lowest it has ever been in my life.

Fast forward to January 12 when I finally gave birth to our little (well actually kind of big lol) baby boy who we were so so in love with.  I couldn't believe how it felt to actually bend over and twist back and forth right after Riggs had vacated my belly.  You moms out there know what I'm talking about, right?!

four hours after giving birth
hopefully this doesn't scare you into never having kids lol
I was actually so happy with how my stomach looked, because it was still quite a bit smaller than it had been about 5 hours before.  It felt so much smaller than it looks in that picture by the way - probably because the consistency was so different!

It didn't take long, however, before I was feeling pretty unhappy about how big my stomach was.  I think it was a week after Riggs was born that I took the following picture and felt so upset over how my belly looked.

You can probably tell from my face how I was feeling at the moment.  Instead of doing anything to change, I wallowed in a little bit of self pity for a month or two, and my stomach did continue to shrink a bit as the weeks went on.  I struggled with horrible sciatica during the first few months after Riggs was born, and I knew it was because I was sitting too much (breastfeeding is so special but it definitely contributed to how much I was on the couch).  I started going on walks every day to get out of the house and because it was the only thing that would ease my sciatic pain.

After we moved into our new home, I knew it was time to get back to the active lifestyle I had led before my pregnancy.  I saw a friend on Facebook had started a program called insanity, and I decided to try it out for myself.  In the past I'd always gotten the majority of my exercise outside, but I needed something I could do during nap times and in-between feedings and I wanted something that would get me back into shape pretty fast.

Insanity was...insane.  You need to go watch the infomercial and see how much the really really inshape people are struggling as they complete the workout and then maybe you'll begin to understand. But I was very dedicated to the program and worked very hard, sticking to the schedule (six days a week for 60 days).  Doing this program was extremely hard and I thought about skipping nearly every single day, but at the same time, it was so addictive.  I LOVED it and the feelings I got every time I finished a workout.  I felt so incredibly accomplished and strong, like I could literally do anything.  I got stronger and stronger as the days wore on, and I completed a second round of the 60 day program after I finished the first.

Now I know that isn't the best picture, and I still have a ways to go to be in the shape that I want to be, but I am so proud of myself for what I've accomplished.  I worked hard and I'm happy to see the changes that my hard work has brought about in my body, especially my stomach.  I'm still a little self-conscious about the consistency of my skin, and I know that it will probably always be a little bit that way, a little soft, but that's okay.

I know a lot of people make New Years resolutions regarding their bodies, and I guess I'm going to be one of those people in 2013, because I'm pretty dang resolved to keep working on being the strongest and best version of myself that I can be.  My goal for 2013 is to complete a half-marathon and to run the entire time.  The longest race I've run is the Twilight 12k and I didn't really train at all for that so I'm not worried about the distance of a half-marathon as much as I am about being at my best during the race.

For those of you who have made some sort of fitness or health goal for 2013, please share in the comments!  I love to hear about other people's goals, I find it very inspiring.

Finally (I promise I'll be done soon - ha) I had to share some pictures I took while shopping at Target yesterday.  I tried on a few things and as I was getting dressed again I realized that I had dressed Riggs nearly exactly the same as my own outfit.  SO WEIRD, but really cute too...

my first birchbox

I'm a little late in posting this but I had to share the items I got in my first every birchbox for December! It is so exciting to get a little package in the mail full of new beauty products - it makes me feel pampered and I love it.

First of all, I LOVED the packaging.  There was so much pink and gold, two of my most favorite colors.  I actually waited to open the entire box until after Riggs was asleep so that I could really enjoy it with 100% of my attention.  I opened it slowly and looked everything over and I have to say at first it just didn't seem like much in the box.  But once I took everything out and started using the various items I was really satisfied with what was in my box.

1.  Rent the Runway - $50 off a purchase of $125 at Rent the Runway.  I've heard a lot about this service and am intrigued, just not sure I really need "runway" ready clothes while chasing around a lab and toddler (oh man, tear) all day.  But I am definately going to check it out one of these evening after Riggs is in bed or at naptime.

2.  Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo - This is by far my favorite of all the things I received in my box.  I mean I LOVE this stuff - the way it feels, the smell, everything.  This might be a whole separate post in itself, but I haven't shampooed or conditioned my hair in over 4 months.  This summer we switched to just baking soda and ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinse and my hair has been amazing as a result.  But this stuff is vegan friendly and free from sulfate/sodium chloride and parabens, so I decided it would be ok to try in my hair.  You can use it as an all-over body wash too and I'm considering purchasing this in it's full size just for that purpose.

3.  Tweezerman - filemate.  This is a cute little nail file that is the perfect size for taking it along wherever I go.  I love the colors and it is very thick and high quality.

4.  29 Preserves - Sample pack including night moisture, eye emulsion, serum extract and cream cleanser.  Ok this stuff was amazing!  I would love to purchase each item I tried because it felt SO GOOD on my face but it's pretty dang spendy (we're talking $503 for all four full-size items) so maybe after I empty my coin jar 3 or 4 or 10 times - ha.

5.  Juicy Couture - Juicy Couture.  I'm not a huge fan of trying new fragrances as a general rule.  I sprayed just one tiny spray of this one and although it's a nice mix of fruity and floral smells, it's just too overpowering for me.  I'll probably give it to my little sister who wears a variety of different fragrances depending on her mood.  I guess I'm still sticking with my Vera Wang Princess, which I've worn every day for three years...at least until I find something I like better.

6.  theBalm cosmetics - Mary-Lou Manizer.  This is a luminizer/highlighter in a beautiful honey color.  I love it and have used it every day since I opened the box.

So that was my December birchbox.  I highly suggest signing up for this monthly sample program and if you do please use the link on my sidebar so that I get the reward points!  I can't wait to get January's box and see what surprises it holds for me.

maps, books, and bangs

Wednesday is almost over but I've got some free time and wanted to link up again with Michelle over at The Vintage Apple for Oh, How Pinteresting.  Today I'll be listing my favorite five pins and then my top two repinned pins from the week.  Here we go!

..................................

I daydream about doing this because I haven't been
wearing my ring lately (diamond catches on everything and lots of baking lately).

Or Harry Potter, Pride & Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility.
So excited to add all three Hobbit segments to this list!

1. I want a library in my house
2. I love bookshelves that are painted dark blue or black

Riggs is definitely getting a huge map mural in his room at some point.

I am so bringing this picture with me next
time I get my hair cut.  I love it so much!
