Spring Equinox

"For behold, the winter is past;
the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove
is heard in our land.
The fig tree ripens its figs,
and the vines are in blossom;
they give forth fragrance…"
Song of Solomon 2:11-13 ESV

Today is Spring Equinox.  I wish I could say it looked like spring here, but it truly does not…not at all.  It was 16 degrees above zero when I took Beau out this morning around 8:30am.  There are heaps and heaps of snow on the ground.  There isn't any green anywhere, unless you count the dull green of the spruce trees (in winter they look more gray to me than anything).

But green isn't the measure of Spring Equinox…light it.  And luckily, there is more and more beautiful, life-giving light each day.  Spring Equinox is the day when the length of day and length of night are just about equal.  Today in Anchorage, there will be 12 hours and 7 minutes of daylight.  How exciting!  I know that despite the cold temperatures and piles of snow, it is beginning to feel like spring.  After I put Riggs to bed last night around 8pm, I came back out to the living room, and smiled happily when I realized that it was still somewhat light outside.

Also, the coming of spring fills me with energy and a desire to do so many things!  This week I plan on tackling some sewing and knitting projects and spending time each day spring cleaning all throughout my house.

Do you feel like Spring has come where you are?  What is it inspiring you to do?

  1. The light is making a huge difference! And seeing the icicles with dripping water it gives me hope! I am doing the same as you, trying to finish projects and manage cleaning too :)

  2. Spring has for sure hit Pullman. There's green grass everywhere and the daffodils are just popping up. Aside from the light dusting of snow we got last night....
